Practical tips for real people who want to make a great impression
In a world full of screens and scrolling, handing someone a business card is still one of the most personal, memorable ways to connect. But not just any card will do — it needs to look sharp, feel professional, and say the right things in just a few seconds.
Whether you’re a small business owner, freelancer, or just starting out, here’s how to design a business card that actually works — and gets remembered.
1. Start with the Essentials
Your business card should include only the most important info. Keep it clean, clear, and easy to scan:
- Your name
- Job title or service
- Business name
- Phone number
- Website or social media (if relevant)
Tip: Don’t overload your card. White space is your friend.
2. Make It Look Like You
Your design should reflect your personality or brand. Ask yourself:
- Are you bold or elegant? Fun or formal?
- Should the colors match your logo or website?
- Do you want it minimalist, artsy, or high-impact?
At Hutty Designs and Print, we help people translate vibes into visuals — even if you have no design background.
3. Use High-Quality Visuals
A blurry logo or pixelated print can ruin a first impression.
- Use vector files for logos (PDF, SVG, AI)
- Make sure any images are 300 DPI for print
- Choose a professional typeface (no Comic Sans, please 😅)
4. Don’t Forget Print-Specific Details
Designing for print is different than for screen! Here’s what matters:
- Size: Standard AU card size is 90mm x 55mm
- Bleed: Add 3mm bleed to all sides so your card prints edge-to-edge
- Safe zone: Keep text at least 3mm inside the edge to avoid cutoffs
We always check this for you at Hutty before sending anything to print.
5. Think About Function, Not Just Looks
Ask yourself:
- Can people read it at a glance?
- Is the most important info easy to find?
- Does it look different from others in your industry?
Bonus idea: Add a QR code linking to your portfolio, Instagram, or booking page!
6. Choose the Right Paper & Finish
Design is half of the impact — print quality is the other half. Choose from:
- Matte or gloss?
- Thick or extra thick?
- Foil? Emboss? Rounded corners?
If you’re unsure, we’ll walk you through samples at Hutty so you know what feels right.

A business card is a tiny billboard for you. Make it simple, memorable, and professional — and you’re already ahead of the pack.
